History of Third World Shop Fukui since 1991

 From its establishment in February 1991, Fukui Third World Shop Institute actively promoted international cooperation at the people’s level through cultural exchanges, study visits, workshops, economic empowerment and environmental conservation projects, and fair trade shops and exhibitions.
Between 1991 and 2010, Third World Shop collaborated with developing country partners in Asia, Africa and Latin America and wants to express its gratitude for the cooperation of the people and the various organizations it has worked with in various countries, including those in Fukui Prefecture.

1990 October/November Community business school for women in Haruyama District in Fukui Prefecture, Japan
1991 June Visit to Bangladesh to organize a fair price shop to market traditional embroidery products made by members of the Association for Nokushikata Embroidery in Bangladesh based on rural-urban sales.
1992 January Visit to Bangladesh NGO partner to promote an education and income generating centre for rural women, “A Place for Learning and Employment for Women in Bangladesh” Collaborating with the Friends of Flowers, Matsumoto and Friends of Shiromachi groups in Fukui City to promote community development activities involving residents of Fukui City
June Office of Third World Shop moved to near Ote post office in Fukui City
July Third World Shop organized a cultural exchange visit by a Russian children’s choir to Fukui. The choir took back 140 hearing aids given by Third World Shop for the use of hearing impaired children in Russia. The hearing aids were distributed in Russia by the Russian Khabarovsk “Board of Deaf Children”
1993 February Exchange visit to Bangladesh for discussions with Bangladesh women’s groups 
July Third World Shop organized a display of recycled milk cartons during the Fukui National Convention of the World Paper Exhibition
August Organization of exchange visit to Fukui by the traditional Haitian music group "Butsukangine"
1994 June-August Third World Shop renamed "Asantesana" (thank you in Swahili) and moved from Fukui Shiromachi townAugust: Visit by child peace delegation from Mozambique organized in collaboration with National Cultural Committee of Mozambique’s “Guns-to-Hoes” peace movement to replace surrendered weapons for agricultural tools
November Organization of the first seminar to promote awareness and capacity for participation in international activities by Japanese citizens
1995 December Visit to Bangladesh to distribute stationery ? microscopes - to eight primary and junior high schools
April Visit to Mozambique to attend meeting in Maputo
July Exchange visit to Fukui by dance troupe "Royal Flower" from Myanmar
August Participation in NGO Forum during Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing
December Collection and shipment of used bicycles from Fukui to Mozambique for use by the “Gus-to-hoes” peace initiative
1997 March Organization of plant dyeing training workshop in South Africa by Japanese plant dyeing specialists to promote economic empowerment for black women
1998 March Establishment of the "Center for Life Insurance for Women" in Bangladesh, Reforestation project in Kenya to provide construction wood to a Masai village
1999 All Reforestation project in Kenya to provide construction wood to a Masai village
July Exchange visit to Fukui by Bolivian folk music group
August-October Two interns from the "Center for Life insurance for Women" in Bangladesh invited for training in managing the Center
September Collaboration with India’s "Mirror Embroidery" Production CooperativeFolk dance group from India invited to Fukui, Organization of exhibition in Fukui on Indian people, Organization of sales exhibition in Fukui for Indian traditional textiles
2000 March Reforestation project in Kenya to provide construction wood to a Masai village

Since 2001
From 2001, the activities of the Third World Shop were integrated with those of the NPO Corporation Partnership Center, Fukui City which has carried forward its work into the 21st century despite major challenges. The younger generation of civil society leaders in the NPO Corporation Partnership Center is working to promote environmental conservation activities in Northeast and Southeast Asia in collaboration with government, business and international civil society partners.
