Issues discussed

The NPO representatives explained the project work plan.

The participants agreed that while everyone in Seoul was aware of the river Han, few had the opportunity to participate in activities linked to river conservation. The river flows from the mountain to the sea, linking a range of environments but children in South Korea had no chance to understand at first hand the ecological importance of the river. It was important to train future environmental leaders through a sound practical environment education for children.

On implementing the Earth College curriculum, it was felt that environmental experts should be consulted and there should be interaction with other river-linked networks in Japan and South Korea. There were not many river environment experts in South Korea and the country could benefit from the expertise in this area in Japan. The Earth College could teach about the importance of the river in Korean culture and history. It was suggested that summer was a good time for the activities of the Earth College.

It was said that a good way for children to learn about river environment conservation and become environment leaders was through practical, hands-on education.
